Banner Talk

Deep Squats (Thoughts)
Ever wonder why teams, businesses, communities and movements have banners? I did. So I looked it up a bit and there’s a ton of research. Ultimately, we need something bigger than ourselves. Banners give that thing an identity.
Banners symbolize group identity, fostering unity and belonging. They encapsulate shared values, boosting morale and reinforcing affiliation. Research shows shared symbols enhance social connectedness and mental health (Cruwys et al., 2013).
Studies confirm visual cues tied to group identity improve self-confidence and performance (Gu & Xue, 2022). They reinforce commitment during challenges. Group cohesion via symbols is linked to reduced anxiety (Marmarosh et al., 2005).
Banners project strength to outsiders, boosting group confidence and reputation. Displaying them evokes pride, mentally preparing members for adversity. Visible symbols enhance community identification, buffering stress (Jetten et al., 2020).
All this time I just thought it was cool to have things on the wall or facing out towards the street. Apparently, we all get a benefit.
Let’s have a “contest” to design a banner to put up at the gym. Indoors for members or outdoors to project our values. Send me your ideas and let’s get something made up.
See you in class.
