Is CrossFit Special?

Deep Squats (Thoughts)
Summer travels continue, which means the drop-in reports continue. Thank you to Katie, Andrew and Ali for their contributions this week.
“Hi from Florida! I’ll be out tomorrow, but no worries, I dropped into CrossFit Fernandina today and woof. I managed to pick the class with 1) the owner, 2) the head coach, 3) the gym manager, and 4) the gym queen – all of whom were amazing muscle mommies! And in 95 degree weather with 1 billion percent humidity. Anyways, great gym and super friendly/welcoming people. 100% recommend.”
Andrew and Ali dropped in at Backcountry CrossFit in Littleton, CO. The opposite of high humidity. But still a great experience and workout.
You may wonder why I emphasize dropping in to other gyms while traveling. It’s because I think it’s important to:
- Stay fit/strong/capable.
- Put yourself into new environments and adapt.
- Realize that you are part of something bigger than yourself.
- Share yourself with others outside of your regular environment.
We joke about being special, but CrossFit is something different than most things. It’s a workout. It’s a gym. It’s a community. It’s a competition. For some of us, it’s a career. It is definitely unique and yet remains hard to define or to wrap up in a small package.
CrossFit is so many things that it’s hard to define in a narrow manner. Which, is one of my favorite things about it. We all get to decide what CrossFit is to us. And yet, we can do it together. When you drop in to other gyms you get to experience other people and they get to experience you. Please continue to be generous with your selves while you’re away and to those that drop in to CFPA while they are visiting us.
Please feel free to share what CrossFit or CFPA is to you. You can send it to me or put it out for the world to see on Yelp or Google.
See you in class.
Tim

10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People by David Yeager
Imagine a world in which Gen Xers, millennials, and boomers interact with young people in ways that leave them feeling inspired, enthusiastic, and ready to contribute—rather than disengaged, outraged, or overwhelmed. That world may be closer than you think. In this book based on cutting edge research, psychologist David Yeager explains how to stop fearing young people’s brains and hormones and start harnessing them.
Tim’s Takeaway: Thanks to Amanda for this referral. WOW. I feel like I’ve done every mistake in relating and motivating my kids and others. BUT, there’s hope. And this book is giving me some actionable steps. Even if it’s simply stopping what he refers to as “Grownsplaining”. And just like using cues and concepts from CrossFit Kids in adult classes, I think there are methods and ideas to be used with the general population of all ages.
Thank you for your support.
I look forward to what we will do together.
