Summer/Travel Squats (Thoughts)

It’s been HOT here. And everywhere else. It’s understandable that it’s hard to want to go workout or train in the heat. It’s uncomfortable. You get extra sweaty. You don’t know the area. It’s a different gym. There are endless reasons to NOT do the workout. BUT, I am here to remind you that you will be happier and healthier when you win that battle over your mind and just get started.

Our members travel all throughout the year with Summer is especially busy with travel. Some of y’all have been gone all summer long. My favorite thing is seeing you show back up and share your stories. The second favorite is when you send me photos of your drop-in at another CrossFit gym, post your visit to social media or send me the photo of you getting after it in the hotel gym. Don’t hold back. Let me have ‘em. Maybe that’s the thing that helps get you moving. I don’t really care what motivates you to do the workout. I just care that you actually did it.

Consider this. Your bond with the CFPA Community isn’t just on the days you attend class. We are like-minded people. We share that with each other. When you get active outside the gym you are contributing to the health, wellness and fitness of our whole community. You’re basically on a fitness team. Taking care of yourself helps every other member’s fitness. It’s a wild concept, but maybe it can get you out the door for a run/walk on the beach, hike on the trail/mountain or feeling a bit of pride as the only person using the squat rack at the globo-gym for actual squats. AND doing them to depth with perfect technique.

Here’s to you, CrossFitter on Summer Vacation. May your squats remain low and your standards stay high.

P.S. If you’re going to drop in to another gym, please go to their website and follow their directions for visiting/dropping in. Every gym is different, but a good rule of thumb is to make contact 24 hours before you want to train.

Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? by: Seth Godin

There used to be two teams in every workplace: management and labor. Now there’s a third team: the linchpins. These people figure out what to do when there’s no rule book. They delight and challenge their customers and peers. They love their work, pour their best selves into it, and turn each day into a kind of art.

Linchpins are the essential building blocks of great organizations. They may not be famous but they’re indispensable. And in today’s world, they get the best jobs and the most freedom.

Tim’s Takeaway: This is a good reminder to find ways to be useful. I teach it to my kids in sports to get playing time and move up the ranks. And I have used it to differentiate myself from the masses when a selection has to be made.

Here’s a link to an animated video summary if you don’t want to read the book.

Thank you for your support.

I look forward to what we will do together.
