Going Forth

“If you’re struggling to make a transition, create a defining moment that draws a dividing line between Old You and New You.” ― Chip Heath.

Deep Squats (Thoughts)

I LOVE hearing about your drop-in experiences and all your other thoughts and uses of CrossFit. Thank you for sharing and please keep them coming!

From Chris: I dropped in at the Grit Barn in New Paltz, NY with a college roommate. The gym is in a detached garage, no more than 6 students at a time (4 barbells total). They have a woodburning stove to keep the place warm in the winter. They are not a CrossFit affiliate yet, but owner is on Long Island for a CrossFit competition this weekend.

This story is like so many Old School CrossFit gyms starting in garages and growing with friends. It’s so refreshing to know that the spirit of entrepreneurship and Grit are alive and well in the world.

2nd Photo from Cyrus: (2nd from Right): Completed the neighborhood DIY Triathlon.

From Zachi: Some thoughts after this email from you and our workout today (that included ring dips).

For me, the Rx is something I aspire to! A goal. Every time I can do one, it’s an achievement. When i started, I couldn’t do any Rx workouts.

If there were 24″ box jumps: Can’t do. If there were pull-ups: No way. Swings with 32 KB: I couldn’t even bring the KB over! … and the list goes on and on: double unders, dips, cleans and so on.

It’s kind of overwhelming to try and really get better in all of these. So I started focusing on small ones. 24″ Box Jumps: Focus, determination, practice (in jumping), and I’m there. No longer a barrier. Hard – yes, obstacle – no.

Pull-ups: Installed a bar at home. Then I started doing 20 a day. Initially, I couldn’t even do a real one. So it was with legs on the floor assisted-version, then jump-help and going down slowly. Then there was one, and 2. Today, I can easily do 5 in a row. And in the Gym: No bands attached! Next is to learn kipping 🙂

Weights: Just came with practice and confidence. I tried 32kg once, and survived. So certainly doable these days.

Thus, from ‘No Rx’ whatsoever to I can do SOME of them. That’s progress!

What’s next: For sure double unders. I started practicing with a jump rope at home.

And I hope to start swimming again after the marathon: That should really help with all these overhead snatches and posture. We’ll see.

Thank you all for contributing to CFPA and to the world around you.

See you in class.

Tim

The Way of Champions Podcast #500 w/Steve Kerr

We invited Steve on because he has been such a huge supporter of our work over the years, and he epitomizes the type of coach and builds the type of culture that we believe is essential in today’s sporting environment.

In our discussion today, we talk about: his journey, how he has changed as a coach, how he has adapted to the modern athlete, what characteristics youth coaches can instill in their young athletes, the coaches that influenced his journey, how he is trying to influence the next generation and bring some more humanity to coaching.

We also discuss how the results are always connected to the process and the values, and that is the starting point.

Tim’s Takeaway: I love this podcast and the constant reminder that no matter how long we’ve done something or how much we’ve achieved we can always keep learning. I linked the YouTube video for easy reference and a video. I enjoy following on Spotify, but it’s available on all the platforms.

Tell me what you like. Music? Books? Movies? Series?

Thank you for your support.

I look forward to what we will do together.
