Getting Closer

“I’m getting closer.”
Andy Murray

Deep Squats (Thoughts)
The quote above is from tennis player Andy Murray. He had just lost the Wimbledon Final after 3.5 hours. What an amazing attitude! What a great reminder of how to approach life, goals, sports, anything. “What you make the loss mean changes everything.” Check out the reel HERE.
Thank you to Ritu for providing some takeaways from Roger Federer’s Commencement Address to Dartmouth in 2024.
“Effortless” is a myth: Federer noted that he had to work incredibly hard behind the scenes to make his play look easy. He emphasized that talent goes beyond pure gifts; it requires grit, discipline, patience, and loving the process.
“It’s only a point”: Despite winning nearly 80% of his career matches, Federer won only 54% of the individual points he played. This taught him not to dwell on failures. When you lose a point, a match, or a job, you have to accept it, process it, and move on to the next one with renewed focus.
Life is bigger than the court: Federer stressed the importance of balancing professional ambition with family, culture, friendships, and giving back to the community. A rewarding life must be multidimensional to prevent burnout and remain grounded.
See you in class,
Tim

Sports analyst Ric Bucher has spent the last three decades surrounded by some of the greatest athletes of our time. Over the years, he became obsessed with the ultimate question in sports and life: Which traits separate the best from the rest? He began asking that question, and the same answer kept coming back again and again from greats like Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Diana Taurasi, Brandi Chastain, and Stephen Curry: “I was coachable.”
Coachable? Yes, coachable. Of all the possible markers that contributed to their greatness, coachability emerged as the surprising X factor. So Bucher set out to explore this often overlooked aspect of the careers of every major athlete he could access and found stories that these stars have never revealed.
Coachable is organized around the 10 Truths of Coachability that every athlete, team leader, manager, coach, and parent needs to know. Each truth is dissected and illuminated through exclusive interviews and stories from legendary coaches. Taken together, the stories and insights in Coachable are a fascinating window into how we can improve at whatever we do.
Tim’s Takeaway: I love that no two stories to success are the same. I especially love when people figure out how to “beat the odds”, “overachieve” or “do it their way”. At the same time I love that there are some universal truths, namely being willing to humble yourself in service to a greater purpose will serve you in the long run. Maybe not with a trophy, but with the fulfillment that you lived a life of virtue and integrity.
Please keep sending me suggestions for what you would like to share with our community.
Thank you for your support.
I look forward to what we will do together.
