Competition And Classes

“Class is competitive, but competition is not a class.”

Deep Squats (Thoughts)

Congratulations, again, to the 2026 CrossFit Games Quarterfinalists from CrossFit Palo Alto!

Sorry, not sorry, for mentioning this again. Just 10 days after completing The Open all of our qualifiers opted in to throw down and do their best. Brianna had to find a gym in Florida to compete on vacation!

What I want to really focus on is the idea that everyone chose to compete despite knowing that they may not be able to complete the workout, let alone do all the required elements. Some people set new personal records just to do the minimum requirement of the workout. Others were shut out because they didn’t have the capacity or ability to continue to the next level. BUT, they showed up and competed.

If you’ve ever considered not coming to CrossFit because, “I can’t do (fill in the blank),” then… STOP IT! There are VERY few acceptable reasons to skip class.

The other day I said, “Class is competitive, but competition is not a class.” I’ll explain further. We want you to compete in class. At your level of ability to get the most out of the workout and the intended stimulus. Compete against yourself, others in class or someone else’s time/score on the board. Find a way to get more out of yourself.

Competition, like The Open or Quarterfinals, is not a class. The point isn’t to adjust the workout to you, but for you to meet the standard required by the workout. Sometimes you can do that and other times you can’t. That’s competition. You are putting yourself out there and being vulnerable to the possibility that you just don’t have what it takes to complete the requirement or that you don’t rank as high as you might have liked when the results come out.

That’s when you have compassion with yourself and the result. Allow yourself to be changed by the result. Use it to move on and forward with your training and life.

Classes and competition are opportunities to experience concentrated growth. It is my honor and pleasure to provide an environment for you to experience both.

See you in class.
Tim

What Got You Here Won’t Keep You There – Captains & Coaches #105

Success isn’t the finish line.
It’s the entry ticket.

Let’s talk about the moment most athletes get wrong.

You make varsity.
You earn a starting spot.
You get recruited.

For a second… it feels like you made it. And then something shifts.

You’re not the best anymore.
The game feels faster.
The competition is better.

And you start thinking: “Wait… I thought I already proved myself?”

You did.

You proved you belonged.

Now you have to prove you can stay.

Tim’s Takeaway: Tex is a great coach. I’ve known about him for many years from old school CrossFit Football days. More recently he’s branched out on his own and is really working on his voice and material. Side note: when you see Luke this summer around the gym you can know that it is Tex’s strength program that is helping him get strong and jacked for lacrosse.

Thank you for your support.

I look forward to what we will do together.
