Deep Squats (Thoughts)

Zig Ziglar: “You don’t have to be great to start, but you do have to start to be great.”

Last week someone asked me what the hardest skill in CrossFit is. I responded with a snarky, “Showing up.” I knew she meant something like muscle up or squat snatch and I said it anyways.

Showing up is a lot like “Getting Started”. This idea has come over me a lot this last week as we have had a lot of members return to the gym after breaks of some sort. Work conflicts. Family demands. New babies. Sick relatives. Extended travel. The list is endless. Starting over may even be harder than starting new because you know it’s going to be hard, but you do it anyways. YAY!

I used to be WAY harsher in my description of anyone that missed workouts. Admittedly, life is so much more understandable as I get older. This life stuff is hard. Parenting is hard. You name it. So now I really just get excited when every one of you wins the day and shows up. Because THAT is hard. And it’s a battle that never ends.

A few years back, I was driving to the airport with my Dad. Kristen was already in Colorado to run the Leadville 100 mile race. I was going to meet her to be her crew for the race. My parents came from North Carolina to watch the kids for a few days.

“Dad, when do you feel grown up?” Mind you, I had a wife, three kids at the time and a successful business. I fully expected a quick one liner in classic Rich Dymmel fashion. Instead, I got a bit of a pause and then, “You know, I don’t think you ever do. For my entire life I always looked at my parents as the adults in the room and I was the kid.” Possibly the deepest thing my Dad has ever shared with me.

Maybe it’s because I’m 50 now, but I have such an appreciation for all the craziness that every one of us carries inside. And if we get ourselves to walk every day, come to CrossFit a few days a week, eat more protein and less processed food then I’m a happy man and stoked for all of us.

If I can be of more service than offering the 2-3 CrossFit classes you attend each week and some fun banter about the world we live in, please don’t hesitate to ask.

See you in class.
Tim

P.S. Thanks to Zig Ziglar, I started writing this with the intent of espousing the value of starting to do something before we understand it. But, we see where that ended up. Regardless, I hope it helps you.

Slow Horses: The Series

Slow Horses is a British spy thriller television series based on the Slough House series of novels by Mick Herron. It follows an MI5 unit where disgraced or failed agents are consigned, under the supervision of Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman).

The series premiered on Apple TV+ on 1 April 2022 to highly positive reviews. The first four series have adapted the novels Slow Horses, Dead Lions, Real Tigers, Spook Street, respectively. The fifth series, based on the novel London Rules, premiered on 24 September 2025.

Tim’s Takeaway: I have “read” (listened) to these books over the years and enjoyed the action and adventure. While flying on American Airlines over the weekend I watched Season 1 of this series on AppleTV. It’s very well done and a fun watch.

Thank you for your support.

I look forward to what we will do together.
