Exercise is Freedom

“The key to happiness is… physical exercise.”
– Teddy Roosevelt (Night at the Museum 2)

Deep Squats (Thoughts)

Following our July 4th workout, I had some thoughts about freedom, exercise and the relationship between the two.

Exercise liberates us physically by enhancing our body’s capabilities and resilience. CrossFit’s constantly varied, high-intensity workouts strengthen muscles, improve cardiovascular health and boost endurance. Combined, this allows us to move with greater ease and confidence. Whether it’s powering through a Workout of the Day, lifting heavier weights, or simply climbing stairs without fatigue, exercise expands our physical potential. This newfound strength and stamina grant us the freedom to engage in activities we enjoy, explore new environments, and live life with fewer physical limitations.

Beyond the body, exercise fosters mental freedom by reducing stress and sharpening focus. The intense, community-driven nature of CrossFit triggers the release of endorphins, which elevate mood and create a sense of well-being. (Insert Elle Woods quote HERE.) It also helps clear mental clutter, providing clarity and emotional balance through the discipline of pushing past mental barriers in challenging workouts. This mental liberation allows us to approach challenges with a calmer, more focused mindset, freeing us from the weight of anxiety or self-doubt and empowering us to make decisions with confidence.

Exercise/CrossFit also cultivates personal autonomy by fostering discipline and self-control. (Insert Jocko clip HERE.) Committing to a CrossFit routine requires setting goals, prioritizing time, and pushing through discomfort in varied and demanding workouts, which builds a sense of agency over our lives. This discipline spills over into other areas, giving us the freedom to shape our habits, pursue ambitions, and resist external pressures. By taking charge of our physical health through CrossFit’s structured yet adaptable approach, we reinforce our ability to direct our own path.

Finally, Exercise/CrossFit connects us to a broader sense of freedom through its strong community and opportunities for exploration. The group dynamic of CrossFit classes creates bonds with others, freeing us from isolation and fostering a sense of belonging within a supportive environment. Outdoor workouts, such as running, biking, hiking or bodyweight circuits, allow us to immerse ourselves in nature, breaking free from the confines of daily routines. Through these experiences, CrossFit enriches our lives with a profound sense of freedom, blending physical challenge with social and environmental connection.

Tell me a story about how CrossFit has opened your eyes to your own freedom.

See you in class.

F1 directed by: Joseph Kosinski

An aging American racing driver and former Formula One (F1) prodigy, Sonny Hayes, lives nomadically as a racer-for-hire. Although he raced for Lotus in the 1990s, severe injuries from a crash at the Spanish Grand Prix in 1993 ended his F1 career.[d] He subsequently became a gambling addict and lost three marriages. After winning the 24 Hours of Daytona,[e] his former Lotus teammate Rubén Cervantes, who owns the APXGP F1 Team, offers him a test drive to fill their spare seat. Rubén discloses that his investors will sell the team unless APXGP—last in the World Constructors’ Championship—wins one of the nine remaining Grands Prix that year.

Tim’s Takeaway: Amazing. And if you want to take it to the highest level, find a theater with D-Box seats. You will feel like you are IN the car with the drivers.

Thank you for your support.

I look forward to what we will do together.
