Standards Don’t Set Themselves
“In life, you get what you tolerate.”

Deep Squats (Thoughts)
I saw “Standards Don’t Set Themselves” on a t-shirt this past weekend. I knew I had to write about it and it WILL be going on a CFPA shirt. Because, if we don’t set the standards for ourselves, then someone else will.
One of my favorite people to talk about standards is Nick Saban, former football coach for the University of Alabama. Please enjoy these observations from an article about Coach Saban’s process for sustaining success.
- High Standards and Accountability: Saban sets high standards for himself, his coaching staff, and his players. He holds everyone accountable for meeting those standards, fostering a culture of discipline and excellence. Whether it’s on the field, in the classroom, or in their personal lives, Saban emphasizes the importance of responsibility and ownership.
- Process Over Outcome: Instead of obsessing over the end result, Saban emphasizes the importance of focusing on the process of preparation and execution. By concentrating on doing their best and executing the game plan, the desired outcomes will naturally follow.
- Continuous Improvement: Saban believes in constantly striving for improvement. He emphasizes that success is not a destination but a journey. His coaching staff and players are encouraged to identify areas for growth, learn from mistakes, and continuously develop their skills.
- Focus on the Next Challenge: Saban teaches his team to focus solely on the next game or the next task at hand. He discourages dwelling on past victories or defeats and stresses the importance of staying present and fully engaged in the immediate challenge.
- Building a Winning Culture: Saban places great importance on cultivating a strong team culture based on mutual respect, trust, and unity. He encourages a family-like atmosphere where players and coaches support and push each other to excel.
- Talent Development: Saban is committed to developing his players both as athletes and as individuals. He identifies and recruits talented athletes and then invests in their growth and development, helping them reach their full potential.
- Adaptability: Despite his tremendous success, Saban remains open to new ideas and approaches. He is not afraid to adapt his coaching methods to match the changing landscape of college football.
- Leadership and Mentorship: As a leader, Saban values mentorship and invests time in developing not only the football skills but also the character of his players. He aims to instill life skills that extend beyond the football field.
- Surrounding Himself with a Strong Team: Saban recognizes the importance of having a competent and cohesive coaching staff. He surrounds himself with talented and like-minded coaches who share his vision and work together to achieve the team’s goals.
We are blessed to have an amazing community of people here. When a visitor or member compliments our gym community, I give our members the credit. Y’all are incredible. Thank you for buying into our standards and building on them every day.
See you in class.

Totally stole this off Instagram. It might not be the most “fitspirational” quote, but it reminded me of how I tell people to just accept certain laws of nature, mathematics or movement. We don’t have to fight everything to make progress. We can use the most basic concepts and principles to make extraordinary gains and success.
Thank you for your support.
I look forward to what we will do together.
