CrossFit is Steadfast

“It’s all on you, but it’s not about you.”

– J.P. Dinnell

Tim’s Deep Squats (Thoughts)

The Cambridge Dictionary defines Steadfastness as, “the quality of staying the same for a long time and not changing quickly or unexpectedly.” It is generally thought of as a positive trait. I can also see it as a detriment and seen as an inability to change or modify as the situation demands. I’d like to address it as a positive today.

For the twenty years I have known about CrossFit, the definition has remained the same. CrossFit defines fitness as work capacity across broad time and modal domains. The prescription to achieve this fitness is Constantly Varied Functional Movements performed at High Intensity. This core principle is my guiding light when it comes to programming workouts and structuring the gym experience for our members, visitors and coaches. How we do things on a day to day basis will differ from other CrossFit Affiliates. But, I love how the mission and the prescription remain no matter the circumstances.

If you’re familiar with Jocko Willink, you have likely heard him discuss the dichotomy of everything. Essentially, whatever is our greatest strength is also our greatest weakness. I am living proof of that. I can be steadfast in my morals and principles which benefits me with long term health, wellness and fitness. However, my steadfastness can quickly be seen as stubbornness if I’m unwilling to adapt or change if remaining unchanged will hurt me in the long run. You don’t have to be a Stoic Philosopher to know that one’s ego is the problem and the very thing holding you back from the next level of growth.

Fortunately for all of us reading this, we put aside our egos and steadfast ways to be open to CrossFit and the possibility of growth from changing how we train and think about health and wellness. Let us challenge ourselves to examine how we are being steadfast in positive AND negative ways. Where is the ego holding us back? What are we afraid of?

To use a phrase from “Fitness in 100 Words”, “Routine is the enemy.” So let’s mix it up and lean into our routines to unlock the opportunities we haven’t even thought of yet.

A follow-up to the New York Times Bestseller, Extreme Ownership. Every leader must be ready and willing to take charge, to make hard, crucial calls for the good of the team and the mission. Something much more difficult to understand is that, in order to be a good leader, one must also be a good follower. This is a dichotomy; a Dichotomy of Leadership.

Thank you for your support.

I look forward to what we will do together.
