Tim’s Deep Squats (Thoughts)

“I’m not a human being. I’m a human doing.”

– Dennis Quaid

This week I am away in the woods of Maine at the Origin Jiu-Jitsu Immersion Camp. It’s at a classic summer camp with cabins, bunks, bonfires, etc. They call it immersion because that’s pretty much all that we do each day. Morning, afternoon and evening training sessions are taught by some of the most accomplished black belts in the world. Then we try to apply these new skills while rolling/sparring with each other. In between training on the mats we eat 3 meals and a late night snack (where I am writing this).

Above, I inserted a photo of me helping to build a pull-up rig at The Shop CrossFit in Augusta, Maine. Two years ago I dropped in to The Shop when I came to camp. Bethany and Shawn had started their gym a couple years earlier in their garage, like I did and had just moved into their space when I visited.

Of course, I had to drop-in when I knew I would be coming back out for this year’s camp. However, they were in the process of moving into another, BIGGER space. Instead of my sweat from a workout, I offered my sweat in helping out.

But why Immersion, Tim? Because my life is immersed in CrossFit. Almost everything revolves around it. My work, rest, play, travel schedules all depend on CrossFit Palo Alto operating well. I don’t begrudge it one bit. I love it. I chose this. It is a passion of mine to live a life immersed in the way of a CrossFitter and a CrossFit Affiliate owner. And that means I eagerly offered my services because I am just so excited for The Shop CrossFit Community.

I’d say you can be immersed in more than one thing at a time, but eventually you’ll run out of bandwidth. Personally, I’m also into jiu-jitsu, mountain biking, R/C car racing and travel sports for the kids. I can’t always do all the things, but they are still on my mind.

Here’s where I’m trying to get you. Ask yourself, what are you immersed in? Do you have a passion? How would you describe your lifestyle? If you have an answer, is that what you want to be immersed in? Maybe there’s something else out there for you.

There’s no right or wrong answer to this. I’m simply wanting to challenge you to ask yourself questions and then ask better questions. Please feel free to share any of your thoughts with me as I know it would only make both of us even better.

Overheard in Class:

“The human mind can justify anything.”

We don’t push supplements/nutrition on people. We believe that no one changes their mind or habits unless they want to. We carry a few items for sale. And it’s only because I use and believe in them. LMNT is one of those products I’ve for years. We now offer it by the fridge in the lobby. If you’d like to try it, great. If not, don’t. If you need more information, read the article linked below.

FYI:  I start every day with a packet in a liter of water before I make breakfast. I use 1-2 more throughout the day. The canned version is like a salty treat in my day.

Please mark it on the whiteboard by the fridge if you take a packet or a can.

Following is an article from Robb Wolf about electolytes.

If you’re a health-conscious person, you’ve likely heard the buzz about electrolytes by now. But perhaps you’re not 100% sure what they are, how they work, or what they do for you.

If any variation of those questions is running through your head, you’ve come to the right place. As a former biochemist who’s passionate about electrolytes and health education, I’ve spent decades researching this stuff and breaking down these complex topics. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do today.

To summarize up front: Electrolytes are charged minerals that are essential to life. They conduct electricity between cells and balance fluids — and these functions support our energy, keep our cells properly hydrated, support our heart beating and muscles contracting, balance our mood, and much more.
