Just One Thing

“What’s the one thing I can do, such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?” – Gary Keller

Deep Squats (Thoughts)

I’m going to start one way and probably end up somewhere else. Of course, you know me and that’s what I do. So welcome to the ride.

I have often experienced disappointment in something and felt like it was a waste of time/money/effort/etc. Then, I am reminded of a principle I learned from fellow gym owner, Zac Even-Esh, as I was starting CrossFit Palo Alto in 2009. Zac said he went to seminar after seminar, read book after book and was looking for One Thing at each event. He didn’t know what that thing was, but he only needed one idea that he could apply to his business to make the cost of the seminar, book, etc. worth it. This is the idea I started this email with. Spoiler Alert: By looking for one thing, I always end up with a lot more things or ideas.

When you come to the gym, go to a seminar, go to work, have a meeting, go on a date or ANYTHING, I want you to look for the One Thing you can take with you and multiply. Go to a seminar and learn a new concept. Read a book and get a good quote. Re-read the same book years later and find something else. Coach a class and teach the visitor one thing they didn’t know before. Talk with someone and learn a new fact about them or their family. The possibilities are endless.

You will find what you are looking for. The pictures in this week’s email are from yesterday’s Murph. The potluck photos are my favorite because they show people talking and sharing life with each other. If there’s one thing I try to do with the gym, it’s to provide an opportunity for every one of you to get something out of each workout and from being part of the community. This is “my one thing” with the gym and I just smile when it happens. When you find something (or it finds you), I’d love to know about it. Send me a reply to this or share it in a google/yelp review to help the next person looking for their “one thing”.

“What’s your Gateway Habit to showing up for CrossFit?”

The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results by: Gary Keller

The One Thing explains the success habit to overcome the six lies that block our success, beat the seven thieves that steal time, and leverage the laws of purpose, priority, and productivity.

Tim’s Takeaway: I find it funny that there are many ways of thinking about “One Thing”. My favorite thing of the book was the question starting this email. When I do that one thing, most things fall into perspective and I can focus on them as they come up. If that thing is left till later, then it’s way more stressful. I like reducing my focus to increase productivity. From the book, “Busyness rarely takes care of business.”

Thank you for your support.

I look forward to what we will do together.
